Funding is available to enable communities to celebrate the King’s Coronation in style.

Residents and local community and voluntary groups are invited to apply for grants of up to £250 so they can celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in style.

The City of Wolverhampton Council has made £25,000 available to local communities for activities such as street parties, children’s activities and gatherings in community buildings.

A Council spokesperson said, “Last year, we prioritised funding grassroots community activities to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We supported about 100 different activities and events in the city, creating a lasting legacy in communities. It was so successful, and we had such amazing feedback from local people that we wanted to build on this success.

This year we will be partnering with Wolverhampton Voluntary and Community Action, who will be administering the grants programme on our behalf.”

Please do not be disappointed if you are unsuccessful, your idea may need further development and we only have a total fund of £25,000. After seeking further guidance from our team, you may re-apply and complete another application form.

Initially we will be looking to fund a maximum of one bid per street or organisation, so would encourage you to join up with your neighbours if you are holding more than one party per street.

How will my data be used?

We (WVCA) will use the information collected to process your application for the King’s Coronation Grant Scheme and make a payment to successful applicants. We will keep personal data from your application in our system for up to 1 year, financial details about grant payments are kept for 7 years if you are successful. Your records will be securely and confidentially destroyed when they are no longer needed. We will use anonymised information (not including your personal data) for planning and monitoring, which will be shared with a King’s Coronation Steering Group.

How can I make sure my event is open to everyone?

If you will be inviting specific individuals to an event, you might include a question about anything that you as organisers could do to make it more accessible for them. This will give you some time to plan ahead.

If you are using fliers or invitations think about the images you’re using. Show people you want your event to be open to everyone.

If people “just turn up” you could perhaps have someone on hand to make impromptu alterations to support them on the day.

A few other points that might help make your activity or event more inclusive.

  • Could you reserve somewhere for people to park nearby if they have difficulty walking or some other reason that makes easy access to transport important or necessary
  • Could you provide extra seating for people who might need this, or seating at different heights
  • If the event involves power cabling, can you make sure that this does not offer a trip hazard and is easily able to be seen against its surroundings.

Food – people have a wide range of requirements in terms of food. Not just in terms of dietary requirements but also from a cultural perspective. Think ahead to see what you can do to be accommodating and welcoming.

Alcohol – This might be an issue for some people who might want to attend, think about what you might be able to do to make them comfortable and feel welcomed.

Timings – the event takes place over a specific weekend so this is a given but think about whether you can hold your event or events at times that will accommodate people’s need to attend religious services or people who might be observing Ramadan.

Breast feeding – is there somewhere that someone could breast feed comfortably?

Children – It’s important to think about how you might accommodate children in terms of their safety in relation to equipment as well of course as in relation to alcohol and taking part generally.

Here are some suggestions of things you could do to celebrate…

Join with thousands to celebrate in style

Residents in Wolverhampton are being invited to join with thousands of other people holding street parties across the country to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. Once again the City of Wolverhampton Council is waiving the usual road closure fee, making it possible for residents right across the city to celebrate in style.

Britain has a long history of street parties, dating back to 1919, when the first one was organised to celebrate the end of the First World War. Since that time, communities have spilled out onto the streets to celebrate many occasions, but it was the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 which really cemented the association between street parties and royal events.

Steve Evans, portfolio holder for City Environment and Climate Change said, “Street parties are a fantastic way to bring the whole community together and a great way to create life-long memories. If you’d be interested in having a street party in your road, the best way to start is by having a chat with your neighbours and finding out who else is interested. You can then plan the party as a team, rather than having one organiser.

There are all sorts of fun activities you can plan together such as quizzes and games and everyone can bring food to share.

Applying for a road closure is the best way to ensure a traffic free and safe event, but if you prefer, you can meet your neighbours on a driveway, front garden or in a parking area.

The Council has made it very quick and easy for you to apply for a road closure. All you need to do is submit your application to the Council’s Safety Advisory Group 5:00 pm on Thursday 20th April.”

Street Parties

Having a street party is great way to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and a fantastic way to get to know your neighbours better.

The Council has made it very quick and easy (and, most importantly, free) for you to apply for a road closure for your street, but you’ll need to do this by 5:00 pm on 20th April 2023.

Britain has a long history of street parties, dating back to 1919, when the first one was organised to celebrate the end of the First World War. You can find lots of free resources to help you plan your street party at https://www.streetparty.org.uk/.

If you’re applying for a street closure, why not make it extra fun for the children and incorporate a play street into your celebrations. Playing Out has lots of free resources that will help you to make it fun and safe for everyone.

Why not turn your Coronation Celebration into a PlayStreet?

A great way to make your street party fun for everyone is to hold a playstreet as part of your celebrations. Simply closing your street to through traffic to allow children to play for a few hours, can be incredibly positive for your whole community.

If you enjoyed getting to know your neighbours during the pandemic, why not build on those connections by organising a playstreet and really bring your community together?

Playstreets give children the chance to play freely and bring communities together. Organising one is an amazing and rewarding thing to do for you, your children and your neighbours.

Playstreets create a safe space for children to play out on their doorstep.

They are:

  • Organised by neighbours
  • Temporary
  • Inclusive
  • Safe
  • Simple and joyous

The benefits of playing outside for children are well known, giving them the chance to enjoy valuable physical exercise, make friends, learn new skills and gain independence. Playstreets enable children to do this safely, easily and close to home.

Wolverhampton for Everyone can support you to organise your Playing Out activity. They have produced a free pack with lots of really great tips. You can contact them via hello@wolverhamptonforeveryone.org  for help and advice.
