Historic England’s Neighbourhood Heritage: Grants for Communities programme supports local people to use heritage to shape the future of their neighbourhoods, strengthen community voices and influence local decisions.
Who can apply:
- Organisations based in England, including constituted community groups, charities, CICs and local authorities. Individuals and sole traders cannot apply.
- Projects must be developed with underrepresented communities in IMD deciles 1–3, the most deprived 30% of neighbourhoods in England. The organisation itself can be based elsewhere.
- You do not need to be a heritage organisation, but should explain how you will access suitable expertise.
What you can get:
- Up to £15,000, with around 21 awards expected. Smaller requests are welcome and match funding is not required.
- Projects can use local research, oral histories, mapping, creative activities or workshops to connect heritage with community priorities and neighbourhood change.
Key notes:
- Communities should help shape the project from the outset and share decisions. Heritage need not be listed or nationally designated.
- Capital works, primarily commercial projects and activities without meaningful community involvement or a clear heritage-and-place connection are excluded.
- Decisions are expected by the end of January 2027. Work can begin only after a grant agreement is signed; projects should aim to finish by 11 August 2028.
- Email the completed application form and budget spreadsheet to neighbourhood.heritage.grants@historicengland.org.uk. An optional online question-and-answer session is available on 9 November 2026.
Deadline:
11:59pm on Friday 27 November 2026.
