Discussions with MPs this week recognised the strain on the sector and the vital role it plays in supporting communities and social cohesion. There are early signs of potential solutions, including better funding approaches and stronger engagement with the sector, but this marks the start of what will need to be an ongoing conversation.

Sharon shares an early update on the development of Wolverhampton’s VCS Strategy and future Covenant/Compact. The initial findings will feel familiar across the sector, highlighting fragmented and unstable funding, pressure on capacity and volunteering, and the need to strengthen trust, communication and collaboration. There is a strong emphasis on moving away from short-term, transactional funding towards longer-term partnerships that build sustainability, prevention and social value. While these challenges are not unique to Wolverhampton, the message was clear: this is the start of a shared journey, and progress will depend on open dialogue, learning from communities, and working together with a positive outlook.

Sharon’s latest update reflects on a strong start to the year, highlighting the energy and diversity of voices at the first VCSEF Alliance Meeting and the ongoing need for space within the sector to connect, share and learn from one another. With this in mind, WVCA is planning a dedicated networking event and the return of ‘Needs and Offers’ to help organisations share resources and support. The update also reinforces the vital role of local infrastructure organisations in navigating consultation and partnership working, while stressing the importance of collaboration in the face of ongoing capacity challenges. Sharon also shares insights from the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership, flagging future opportunities such as small community safety grants, and encourages the sector to stay engaged, connected and in touch.
