The Philip Bates Trust supports young people under the age of 25 to develop their talents and confidence in the arts. The Trust funds a wide range of artistic activity across the UK, with a particular preference for applicants based in — or delivering work in — the West Midlands.

The Trust offers small, meaningful grants to individuals and organisations that create opportunities for young people to learn, perform, exhibit, and explore artistic expression.

Who can apply

Applications are accepted from:

  • Individuals

  • Organisations anywhere in the UK (including charities, not-for-profits, community groups and arts-based organisations)

Priority is given to:

  • Organisations with charitable status

  • Not-for-profit groups with a track record of work connected to the Trust’s aims

  • Applicants based in the West Midlands or delivering projects in the region

You can submit more than one application, provided each relates to a different project. Applications from the same organisation in two consecutive years will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Grant amounts

  • Individuals: typically £100–£250

  • Organisations: usually up to £500

Funding is limited, and the number of grants awarded each year depends on the Trust’s income from fundraising and investments.

Funding priorities

The Trust aims to nurture early talent, boost confidence and widen access to the arts for young people (aged under 25). They prioritise projects that:

  • Recognise or celebrate artistic achievement

  • Provide financial support for young people in the arts

  • Support arts education

  • Encourage performance and exhibition

  • Promote artistic diversity

Application deadlines

Trustees assess applications three times a year, usually in:

  • February

  • June

  • October

Applications must be submitted by the end of the month before each meeting (i.e. January, May or September).

Application requirements

  • Completed application form

  • At least two references

  • Evidence of the organisation’s or individual’s artistic aims and activities
