Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme offers grants of up to £1,500 for local not-for-profit organisations that run projects supporting children and young people. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and shortlisted projects take part in a public vote in Tesco stores to decide the final award amount.

What they fund

Tesco will consider any project that benefits children or young people, including activities, resources, equipment, improved facilities and community projects supporting wellbeing, learning, play or development.

Who can apply

Eligible organisations include:

  • Voluntary and community groups

  • Registered charities

  • Schools

  • Sports clubs

  • Scouts/Guides groups

  • Local authorities

  • Community Interest Companies (CICs) — must be at least two years old

Applicants must be not-for-profit and have a governing document or written constitution.

How the process works

  • Rolling applications — no set deadline (shortlisting may take 6–12 months)

  • Shortlisting every three months — three projects are chosen per region

  • Tesco customer voting — shoppers vote for their preferred project

  • Funding awarded based on votes:

    • 1st place: £1,500 (or the amount requested, up to this value)

    • 2nd place: £1,000

    • 3rd place: £500

Tips for a strong application

  • Apply for the full £1,500

  • Clearly describe the project, who it supports and why it’s needed

  • Avoid jargon and heavy stats — focus on storytelling and community impact

  • Regularly save your application to avoid losing progress

  • Make sure the short project description (used in Tesco stores) is simple, appealing and easy for shoppers to understand
