Tell us about your organisation, why and how you started, and what you do?
For over 40 years, Compton Care has been providing specialist palliative and end of life care, supporting patients and their families as they navigate life with a life-limiting condition. Our priority is to ensure that no one faces this journey alone.
We deliver expert, compassionate care both in our purpose-built facilities and in people’s homes, tailoring support to individual needs so patients and loved ones feel safe, supported, and listened to.
Alongside essential clinical care, we offer a wide range of enhanced services, including psychological support (counselling and bereavement support), our Living Well service and complementary therapies. These services are designed to support patients and families through every stage of the palliative care journey and beyond.
Our services are available free of charge to adults aged 18 and over (and their families) across Wolverhampton, parts of the Black Country, South Staffordshire, and east Shropshire.
What has been your greatest achievement?
With more than four decades of service, one of our greatest achievements is the impact we make every single day , providing expert care, compassion, and reassurance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to people living with life-limiting conditions.
Some of our most significant recent achievements include:
- Embedding a Virtual Ward service, enabling patients to receive hospital-level specialist care in their own homes. Last year, 97% of Virtual Ward patients avoided hospital admission, and 98% had their end-of-life wishes fulfilled.
- Transforming our Inpatient Unit, creating modern, peaceful, and inclusive spaces for patients and families, including improved family facilities and children’s areas.
- Opening a new development in Low Hill, Wolverhampton, expanding access to outpatient palliative care, psychological support, and complementary therapies within the local community.
None of this would be possible without our dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters, whose commitment and generosity enable us to be there for people during some of the most difficult times of their lives.
What is your experience of support received from WVCA?
Our experience of working with WVCA has been consistently positive. Their support has helped us strengthen our volunteer recruitment and development, particularly through guidance, best practice sharing, and the Volunteer Involving Organisations (VIO) Network.
WVCA has also supported us with funding advice, helping us identify opportunities and navigate applications that have contributed to our community outreach and wellbeing work.
Through WVCA’s networking and collaborative spaces, we’ve been able to connect with other local organisations, share learning, and strengthen partnerships across the voluntary and community sector.
What advice would you give to others looking to set up a voluntary group in Wolverhampton?
We strongly believe in the importance of having clarity of purpose – being clear about your mission, values, and the need you are responding to.
Building relationships is equally vital. Wolverhampton has a vibrant, collaborative voluntary sector, and connecting early with local organisations, infrastructure bodies, and community networks can make a real difference to sustainability and impact.
Have you benefited from any funding opportunities or resources shared through WVCA’s newsletters or social media?
Yes. WVCA’s newsletters, networks, and funding advice have helped us stay informed about opportunities that support volunteer development, community engagement, and wellbeing initiatives. These resources have strengthened our capacity and enhanced the support we offer to patients and families.
What are some of the challenges you face, and how can WVCA support you in the future?
Like many charities, one of our ongoing challenges is recruiting and retaining volunteers (we welcome people 18 and over), who play a vital role across all areas of our work — from welcoming patients and families, to supporting our shops, gardens, cafés, fundraising events, and services.
