The government has launched a consultation on proposals to strengthen the Charity Commission’s powers to disqualify trustees and senior charity managers. The proposals would allow the regulator to ban individuals who promote violence or racial or religious hatred, while extending automatic disqualification rules for certain criminal convictions. Although intended to protect charities from extremist abuse, sector representatives have emphasised the importance of safeguarding legitimate campaigning, debate and freedom of expression. The consultation closes on 22 December 2026, giving charities and trustees an opportunity to help shape how the proposed powers would operate.
