A message from the CEO – 9th January 2026
As we move into 2026, Sharon reflects on the growing pressures facing the VCSEF sector, from rising costs and reduced funding to fewer volunteers and increasing demand for services. Nationally, many charities are scaling back, and locally in Wolverhampton long-established groups are feeling the strain, raising important questions about how small grassroots organisations can be supported now and in the future. Sharon highlights the vital preventative role the sector plays across health and social care and makes a clear call for action to match the rhetoric around civil society. She also invites colleagues to continue the conversation at the next VCSEF Alliance Meeting.

She explores how the VCSEF sector is adapting through collaboration, saying no to unworkable contracts, and prioritising wellbeing. Sharon also looks ahead to the NHS 10-Year Plan, where the sector will play a key role in prevention and community care.

Rebuild ceasing to trade at The Reuse Hub – materials available
Rebuild has sadly announced that it will cease trading at The Reuse Hub in Dixon St on 30th June and is offering discounts on building materials to VCSEF sector organisations.

In this update, Sharon highlights a new report from NCVO and ACEVO exploring the evolving relationship between civil society and government. The findings reveal both challenges and opportunities in creating stronger partnerships – with trust, communication, and long-term investment emerging as key themes.
Sharon also invites you to join WVCA at the Mander Centre on Wednesday 4 June for Volunteer’s Week, where 16 local organisations will showcase a wide range of volunteer roles. Plus, there’s still time to apply to the REND Programme, supporting community-led research.
